Is it safe to swim in the ocean in front of the villa?
Generally speaking it's safe to swim right in front of the casa, especially during the High Season, November/December through April/May. There's often good boogie boarding and body surfing right out in front of Casa Luciernaga. But there are a couple important points to make and you always swim at your own risk.
The beach sand bar shifts twice a year: late Spring-early Summer and then again late Fall-early Winter. Most of the High Season the sand covers the local rock out front Casa Luciernaga, so you can swim, body surf and even surf without worrying too much about rocks. When the sand shifts, sometimes the rocks get exposed, which means you need to be more cautious, especially if you're moving at high speeds. When rocks are exposed, you can find safe parts of the beach by staying in close and looking carefully before you enter the water. And of course, there's always the pool, where you can swim any season of the year.
The sand bar phenomenon varies by location, so for example the beach in front the Burro Crazy restaurant, about a mile to the south, is almost always great for swimming, while other parts of the beach always have rock. This gives some areas a special beauty, such as the beach in front of the Present Moment Retreat.
Naturally, any beach with waves can get rough, so use good judgment when you swim and surf. The best thing to do is check with our caretakers, the property manager and other locals about the current conditions. Then, enter the water carefully until you know the "lay of the land (water!)" The water is almost always clear so you can generally see what's going on.
